Gigging life isn’t just about having the right guitar, it’s about having the right gear to keep things running smoothly on stage, in the van, and everywhere in between.
Whether you're playing your first local open mic or heading out on a full tour, these are the essentials every gigging guitarist should have in their kit bag:
1. Spare Strings (Always)
This one feels obvious… until you snap one mid-song and realise you’ve got nothing to replace it with. Always keep at least one full spare set in your case, preferably the same brand and gauge you usually play. A broken string shouldn’t break the show.
Bonus tip: Stretch your strings properly before your set to reduce the risk of tuning issues.
2. Reliable Leads & Spare Cables
You can have the best amp and guitar in the world but if your lead’s crackling or cutting out, your sound’s in trouble.
Invest in a solid, quality instrument cable for your main setup, and keep a spare one (or two) just in case. Same goes for patch leads and power supplies, never hurts to be over-prepared when it comes to cables.
3. Tuner (Pedal or Clip-On)
A good tuner is a non-negotiable. Whether you’re between songs or checking before you start, being in tune is the bare minimum. Pedal tuners are ideal for live setups, but a decent clip-on tuner is also a handy backup.
Trust us, nobody wants to hear you wrestle with tuning mid-set.

Capo – Versatile, small, and easy to forget until you need it.
Guitar stand – Don’t lean your pride and joy against the wall of the venue.
Picks (and somewhere to keep them) – Because they disappear like socks in the wash.
Strap locks – Keep your guitar off the floor and your heart rate down.
Spare batteries – Especially if your pedals or guitar electronics rely on them.
