1. Is Epiphone just a cheap Gibson?
Gibson guitars are, undoubtedly, some of the very best available - but they come with the price tag to match! Epiphone, meanwhile, is a subsidiary of Gibson, positioned as a more affordable alternative.
The iconic designs of the Les Paul and SG are mirrored by the Epiphone, but while Gibsons are handcrafted in the US using top-of-the-line hardware and wood, Epiphones are mass-produced in factories, using more budget-friendly materials.
In terms of quality and tone, you don’t compromise a significant amount by choosing an Epiphone over a Gibson - and you’ll save yourself thousands of pounds in the long run.
2. Is Epiphone a beginner guitar?
Great news! Epiphone makes for a brilliant beginner guitar, thanks to the shorter scale length that reduces string tension, making it easier to press the strings down while you build finger strength.

3. Is Epiphone better than Squier?
This simply comes down to personal preference and the style of music you want to play. Neither Epiphone or Squier are better than the other. It’s just a matter of taste.
Choose the latter for a bright, twangy sound that’s well suited to country or pop and choose the former for the heavier tones you’ll find in rock and metal.
4. How can I tell if an Epiphone is counterfeit?
As with anything these days, there are certainly Epiphone fakes out there on the market. Always buy from a reputable guitar shop and do due diligence before spending any money.
As for the guitars themselves, look out for poor fit and finish, poorly positioned control knobs, incorrect binding and wrong headstock shapes. Always check the serial number as a matter of course.
5. Do any professionals use Epiphone?
In a word, yes!
There are lots of professional guitars out there who use or have used Epiphone guitars, including The Edge, Matt Heafy, Matthew Followill, Noel Gallagher, Slash, Joe Bonamassa… and, of course, both Paul McCartney and John Lennon - so you’ll be in excellent company indeed!
