Description

The Gibson Byrdland is an interesting guitar that originally came out in 1955 for guitarists Billy Byrd and Hank Garland. This guitar would become the first of many guitars that are part of Gibson’s Thinline series. Not your usual hollowbody Gibson the Byrdland has been loved by those who want an easy to play premium hollowbody that can withstand plenty of time on the road.

The History

If you go back to the mid 50’s you start to see the amount of archtop guitars being used slowly decreasing. This is because people wanted smaller and slimmer guitars that were not only much more comfortable but also easier to move around.

When Gibson noticed this they decided to keep the archtop design but bring the scale down so it is just over 2″ thick making it much easier to play. Another change that was made at the request of both Byrd and Garland was to shorten the scale length by an inch and a quarter. So instead of using the common Gibson scale length of 24.75″ it uses a 23.5″ scale length instead. This makes single line runs much easier to play along with more complex chord voicings.

Traditional Archtop Design

Looking at this guitar from the front you wouldn’t think anything was different about this guitar. Just another large 17″ hollow body sitting on the wall. When you pick it up however you will notice just how much thinner this is than other jazz box style guitars. At just 2.25″ thick this guitar is much slimmer than other hollowbodies from around the same time. This makes the guitar not only much lighter but also much comfier to sit with and play.

Made out of the usual hollowbody combination of a spruce top with maple back and sides this guitar this guitar still has that traditional large hollow bodied tone that you would expect. The smaller size does limit the amount of low end rumble you get out of this guitar but that just makes it even better suited to faster single note lines and complex chord progressions.

Slim Neck

Both Byrd and Garland wanted to take their playing up a notch but they felt it wasn’t possible with the old standard Gibson scale length. So they went to Gibson and got the Byrdland made with a shorter scale length and a very thin neck. At just 23.5″ long and as thin as you could want it this guitar is extremely easy to play for pretty much any style from blues to country, jazz, rock and more.

The Hardware

Although it has been around since ’55 it wasn’t until ’57 that this guitar really came in to its own with the slimmer designs and humbucking pickups. That is why this is loaded with a pair of the amazing PAF style ’57 Classic humbucking pickups that get incredibly close to the classic rock tones everyone is hunting for with a guitar like this.
